It is not always easy being green (sorry Kermit) and trying to get the word out about the benefits of a mostly plant-based diet.
It’s even harder when you are a non-profit and need to rely on those who not only get the value of being mostly plant-based, but the subset that choose to give so others will get it too. Fortunately there are more of us every year.
So as 2015 comes to a close, I have chosen to give back and donate to a few non-profits that encourage greens (of course) and that matter to the people I want to help.
Here are some of my favorites from this year:
- Food Fight is changing the way schools think about food, one school at a time. Their food literacy curriculum is helping students and teachers make better food choices. I was so impressed with their program that I also volunteer and work with some of their teachers as a health coach.
- Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) advocates for good nutrition backed by clinical research and has led federal nutritional policy reform efforts. I am also a member and have taken some of their excellent classes.
- Food Not Bombs – Our local chapter on Long Island runs a network of vegan food shares in food deserts every weekend, sharing vegan food and supplies with hundreds of families. If you want to see the true worth of a food share program, read this amazing blog post to see what is involved in a single day. My family participated in their Thanksgiving Food Share, the largest vegan food giveaway in the country, and saw first hand the difference they are making.
- The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) is a reliable and unbiased source of vegetarian information and helps to make the connection between nutrition and health. I value their content and their ethics in staying focused on the science.
By supporting these non-profits and others like them in their efforts to educate the public about plant-based nutrition, it might just get a little easier being green in 2016 and in the years to come.
